Yishun -Sembawang 9.24km

Finally the rain has subsided and a cloudy day lasted the whole day. What better news is that my running nose / flu has stopped too. So what more can you do today but to head out into the sun for a run!

The run was the usual route, from my place to sembawang park and back. Along the route i see alot of runners taking this opportunity to run and bike and blade and fish. I also see a small portion of the track cordon off , caused by landslide due to the non-stop rain. And also an unfortunate sight of a decomposing cat. Sad but Yucks..

This was the first time i am running with a nike hydration belt with 3 bottles instead of my usual soloman hydration bottle belt.

Heres are my finding:
Pros
  • i can divide drinks into different bottle with different drinks.. water, isotonic or mixed with gel
  • distribution of the weight is good
  • no over heating to my butt then the soloman one
Cons
  • contains less water then my soloman bottle
  • need to swap around the bottles when empty . coz i like to use my right hand to pull out the bottle
  • need to clean 3 bottles instead of one
  • mixing gatorade powder is a little more tricky for each bottle. (getting the right portion)

Run-less week

Been down and out since monday due to the onset of you guessed it flu. Its worst then i thought, running nose, constant tearing and red eyes. I looked almost like a zombie.

Have to missed out on all the runs , consolation is that there anit much run looking at the constant rain we are getting pounded by.

Oh well my new hydration belt has to wait...

run - eastcoast 8.2km

Was out on Saturday night with some friends for a birthday celebration. And i received a sms from babumouse confirming about the next day morning run. Friends beside me were saying
"Are you nutz ?"
"Its the rainy season, give yourself a break"
I responded "hey i haven't run for a week"
My friend replied "Hey I haven't run for months!"
The next day morning struggle to get myself up at 6am, the first thing that greeted me was the lightning outside. Looked out the window seems like it had rain earlier. But decided to carry on for the run at eastcoast. Drove down to run3 place , before hitching a ride from her. (car pooling is a good way to stay green) . Along the way we see dark cloud looming behind us , we hope it will hold steady till after the run.

At eastcoast met up with SV and babumouse at McDonald's before moving off for the run. Babumouse was planning for a 30km run while for me i am just happy to do a 8km. We headed down to the fort road turn around before ending at the same spot. Along the way we spotted divey, bee, eddie and xuanjing with the Safra running club doing their morning run. At the end point run3 decides to carry on running all the way hawker center and back (i think thats about 13km) i and SV decided to stay out of the competitive run with her. Babumouse ask us to go ahead back if needed cause his run will probably ends at 11am or so.

We washed up and had breakfast at McDonald's , before it started to rain!

Thats cuppacino from mc cafe in the background.

Yumm thats my big breakfast and milo ice

Adirun - marina esplanade - kallang park 6.6km

Post marathon recovery run with the adirun guys. Well a smaller then usual crowd i guess could be because of the rain cloud looming around. I concentrate on a easy / relax run so did not push myself hard unlike the rest of the speed demon stick around with David, anthony, fahmy and michiko . Chatted over the marathon on the previous sunday and also on the upcoming 30km pacesettler run in january over in KL.

Earlier cfred told us to meet at the pool after the run , but turns out only me and michiko at the pool with joel_li sitting by the pool. After our short swim we changed and as we are leaving the club house. We got locked in... no one has the key. In the end we had to get the security to open the door and also we got a free lecture from him too.

My first marathon - the complete saga

If everyman has their right of passage, i guess mine was to complete a marathon ( a grueling 42.195km run/walk) Heres a little history of the marathon :

The name "marathon" comes from the legend of Pheidippides, a Greek soldier who, according to legend, was sent from the town of Marathon to Athens to announce that the Persians had been miraculously defeated in the Battle of Marathon. It is said that he ran the entire distance without stopping, but moments after proclaiming his message to the city, he collapsed dead tired. There is no evidence that any such event took place; according to the Greek historian Herodotus, Pheidippides was a messenger who ran from Athens to Sparta. The legend that he ran from Marathon to Athens was invented by later writers and appears in Plutarch's On the Glory of Athens in the 1st century AD. The International Olympic Committee estimates the actual distance from the battlefield of Marathon to Athens is about 34.5 km (21.4 miles).
(extracted from wikipedia)

Pre-Marathon report:
Wanted to hitch a ride down with SV, andy and gang but it turned out Andy's vehicle is full (which was not as andy did not know that the headcount number included me, miscommunication there)
So i decided instead to drove down like 3.30am in the morning. Picked up run3 at about 3.45am and reached the capitol carpark at about 4.10am. I guess i was alittle to 'kiasu' to come down that early. Since we are the earliest one to arrive , did a short recce of the area. Oh thanks reno for the wakeup sms... for the first time haha

at 5.15am , Meet the sgrunners at the de-chip tent next to the baggage deposit counter. Sotong, SV, cookie, shoobido, andy, reno and gang.

Marathon saga - episode 1 the first 20km
Music started pounding as the compere starts the countdown at the starting line pen. 3-2-1.. the horn rings out.. away the runners goes..(including me of coz)

Along the first leg i saw IMD snapping away with his camera before i lose sight of him, then Meteor along CBD area. The route to marina south was familiar as our adirun and RL run took the same route. Was still going strong at about 6min/km pace nothing much to note saw superboi, Cfred along the way.

Marathon saga - episode 2 the 20-30km
Saw fahmy, TLR , eddie along eastcoast on my return leg . Not to mention catwoman , spiderman and japanese fisherman in costumes haha. Theres tons of supporters along the east coast leg. Some giving away bananas , powergel and even chocolate bar. I must be having a buffet along this stretch. Spotted roonie on the grass patch attended by a medic seems like the cramps got to him. stopped awhile to check on him. At the SGrunners support station (manned by jamesoh, roonz, KJ, FD, alecchua ..thanks guys) i had my powergel and isotonic drink. Brokie was there during that brief stopover. Wanted to stay longer but KJ keep on pushing me to go..oh well..

Marathon saga - episode 3 the last 10km
Well they say you will hit the wall at about 30km and beyond. I gotta say that it should not be hitting the wall , mentally i was alright but my leg muscle contraction is the problem (thats what they call the cramps!) . So i did a couple of stretches along this leg. As i was having the flu stopping and snorting out the mucus was a must. The stretch to the padang was the most unforgettable i can remember every detail of that scene from the look on the spectators face, expression to the cheers of the crowd, compere . Almost like i was in the Olympics.

Big thanks to sgrunners i have achieve what i have set out to do ..their advice and knowledge had helped. Now plan for recovery Swim, jacuzzi and steam room tomorrow!

Carbo loading for SCSM 2006

Okay been kinda busy to update ( i wouldn't say its a update .. maybe "late"date haha)
Meet up with the sgrunners for a carbo loading on friday night at the crown prince hotel - swenson.
i think over 20 pple came but it does look more to me. Also took the opportunity to pass my hydration drink and power bar for the 30km support station for SCSM. TLR was kind enough to pass us some Uphalyte - oral rehydration salts great for folks like me who sweat like crazy.

Anyhow it was a great night with the gang.
